School Accountability (Leadership) Committee

Open School Circle: In the fall of 1969, a committed group of parents approached Jefferson County Public Schools with an idea for a new kind of school. These families came together in the simple belief that they could expect more from their students' education. By “more”, the founding parents sought a school that would pay mind to their child as a whole person, honoring the personal, social, and intellectual development of each individual. The Jefferson County Open School was approved by the school board and opened its doors to students in the fall of 1970, 50 years ago. Indeed, it is solely the result of parent involvement that the Open School exists. The role of parent involvement has continued to be instrumental in shaping the school during its 50 year evolution. Circle has historically been the primary parent advisory group at the Open School.

The next Circle meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18 at 5 PM.  The meeting will be conducted virtually. The ongoing focus for Circle this school year will be planning a virtual progressive education conference in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Open School.
