Dear Open School Community,

As we find ourselves at another monumental transition point, we wanted to take this opportunity to check in with our parent community and acknowledge all the hard work you have been engaged in and support you have offered. It is astonishing, how each and every family, in-person and virtually connected, continue to create and participate in the learning environments where your students are connected and engaged despite the turmoil in your lives. We are so grateful for the partnerships and support our families have given us as we navigate the ongoing challenges of our times. Our success as a community is inextricably linked to our ability to lean in on and trust each other. As a community we are united in our desire to create the world that ought to be for children. We have had to do much adapting in the past months and while we can only do our small part to control the current spike that is occurring around us, it has been miraculous how few cases have been identified at the Open School. While there have been a few peripheral cases, at no point have we experienced the mass quarantines that have occurred at schools across the district. Clearly, our ability to partner with parents and families to balance virtually connected learners, in-person safety procedures, and a thoughtful approach to our learning models and cohort planning, along with some good luck, has helped provide the safest possible learning environment for all our students. For this we are immensely grateful to all of you. We are proud to be part of such an incredible community.

As our in-person and hybrid learners go virtual for the next several weeks (and possibly longer) we wanted to share some information with our families regarding common features you can expect to see as we continue to work together to support our students. We recognize the efforts of parents and families who have been our “Home Based Advisors” since August and appreciate in advance those efforts our newly virtually connected (remote) families will be making as we move forward. Advisors will continue to create meaningful connections and engaging learning opportunities during this virtually connected time. Features of our program your student will experience include:
 Consistent daily schedules for students working from home with known access routes to online resources for students and parents and families.
 Google Classroom as a uniform tool to deliver static of academic content.
 Periodic updates form Advisors for parents regarding the goings on in virtual Advising groups.
 Use of online resources, such as a website or other tools, to contain basic information about your virtual classroom, such as a link to your live sessions, link to your Google Classroom, office hours, daily schedule, contact information, etc.
 Regular Advising check-ins via a video conferencing tool (such as Google Meet or Zoom).
 Office hours when Advisors are available to parents and students via phone or video call.

Again we want to thank everyone, our virtually connected families and our families transitioning from in-person and hybrid to virtually-connected. We ask that everyone take care of yourself and your loved ones, give yourself grace, and step completely away from the work from time to time. These are unprecedented times. It would be disingenuous to say this is or will be easy; simultaneously, it is a celebration of our community’s resilience that we keep moving on. We firmly believe that through our ability to adapt to the world as it is, we bring forth the conditions to create the world that ought to be. We look forward to the day that we are able to welcome our community back fully, in person.

Respectfully,
Scott, Sangita and Melyssa
