Jeffco Open Remote Learning

Hello Open School Community ...
this is Scott, Sangita, and Melyssa, your admin team.
We want to begin by recognizing the strength and resilience of our community. As a school that is deeply committed to meaningful relationships between students, staff, families, and the larger community, person-to-person relationships are foundational. Despite our natural and philosophical inclinations, the entirety of the community jumped into action to create an online learning environment within twenty-four hours. While continuing the learning is certainly important, we want to emphasize that remaining connected as a community (albeit virtually), is what really matters during this time of distress. To say the transition has been impressive would be an understatement. We are so grateful and proud to be part of such an amazing community.

One of the things that has become apparent this week is the need for a set of norms around how and when we interact in our new digital world. We wanted to be sure that parents/guardians/caregivers are aware of our norms for the main platforms we are using so that you can help your students to observe them. Unless you hear differently from your student’s advisor, following are the norms for students to use Google tools:

Google Classroom
Google Classroom
Most content will be delivered through Google Classroom. Students can access content and complete assignments at any time.

Google Chat
Google Chat
Using Google Chat, teachers and advisors have created virtual “rooms” where kids can chat with them and each other. These rooms are often the launching pad for video calls.
Students should ONLY be using these rooms to chat with one another on school days and about school related items.

Google Meet
Google Meet
These are live video calls that teachers will set up for classes and advising groups. At no time, whether in or out of school hours, should students be in a Google Meet video call without a staff member.

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to look into other video conferencing options if you are interested in your students using these kinds of resources socially.

Please know that Open School staff will continue to provide meaningful opportunities for connection while also providing engaging and enriching remote learning activities. We know the transition has not been flawless and we will continue to work through glitches as we discover them in order to devise solutions. Additionally, Jeffco Schools has announced a four-day school week for the remainder of the remote learning time. This will provide advisors with much needed planning time and work time for students to remain caught up on work.

Again, we want to extend our greatest appreciation and gratitude. We have each derived a lot of personal strength from the resilience and compassion that has been evident throughout the community.
Thank you, be safe, and take care of each other.
Sincerely,
Scott, Sangita, and Melyssa
